How popups can help you grow your email list

Popups are one of the most direct ways to grow an email list, because they put the sign-up in front of readers who would not have found a footer form. The aim is subscribers who open your emails, not just a big number.

Offer a clear reason

Say what the subscriber gets and how often: 'The weekly brief, 5 minutes, every Friday'. A concrete gift such as a checklist or a template raises sign-ups further.

Use more than one placement

  • Exit intent for readers who are leaving.
  • Inside articles for readers who are engaged.
  • At the end of articles, after the reader has finished.
  • A slim bar for ongoing visibility.

Keep the form to one field

Email only is the easiest ask. You can learn more about subscribers later through a preference page or a short welcome survey.

Send a welcome email

Deliver the gift, repeat what they will receive, and invite a reply. A prompt welcome keeps new subscribers engaged and reduces unsubscribes.

Be open about consent

Tell people they are joining a list, and make unsubscribing easy. A smaller list of willing readers beats a larger one of people who never wanted it.

Look beyond the sign-up count

Check open rates and clicks. If new subscribers do not engage, the offer may be attracting the wrong people.
