What is a popup notification? A complete guide
By the SeizeLead team · 6 min read · 17 October 2026
A popup notification is a message that appears over or inside a web page to draw attention to something: an offer, an announcement, a sign-up form or a prompt to act. This guide covers the types and how to use them well.
The main types
- Modal popup: a centred box over the page, usually with a dimmed background.
- Slide-in: a small box from a corner, less intrusive.
- Notification bar: a thin strip at the top or bottom.
- Inline or in-article card: placed inside the page content.
- Floating button: a persistent shortcut such as a chat button.
- Banner: an image or promo placed in a sidebar or header.
What triggers them
A popup can appear on page load, after a delay, after the visitor scrolls, when they appear to leave, or when they click something. The trigger shapes how it feels: interest-based triggers feel helpful, instant ones feel pushy.
What they are used for
- Growing an email list.
- Collecting leads or quote requests.
- Announcing sales and launches.
- Starting a chat on WhatsApp.
- Running polls and quizzes.
When not to use them
Avoid popups on pages where the visitor is completing a task, such as checkout or login, and avoid covering content the visitor has not yet read.
Good practice
- One clear message and one action.
- An obvious, easy close.
- Limit how often it appears.
- Test on mobile.
- Review results regularly.
